Nanny state laws have reached an all-time high. Government is always looking out for us, protecting us from evil things by taking more tax dollars and through all out bans. But why?

When Government sees you doing something dangerous, they’re always looking for ways to “help”. These intrusions into personal liberty are not totally without merit, but they aren’t any of the Government’s business.

In the 1920′s, they “helped” us get rid of alcohol, even though they used to not think alcohol was bad, but after the 20′s they decided it wasn’t so bad after all. Before that they helped us rid our country of other drugs they used to think weren’t a problem. Cocaine used to be in Coca-Cola, the all-knowing Government wasn’t a problem in the mid-late 1800′s. Then someone decided it was a problem.

Nanny state proponents point to the violence that comes from people who use drugs, but they miss the point entirely. During prohibition, only law-breakers drank…because it was illegal. So pointing to people who break the law by doing drugs is intellectually dishonest, at best. What would law-abiding people be like if they had the freedom to use drugs if they chose to? We’ll never know, because none of us alive today can remember.

Having been so successful at banning most mood altering drugs, our protectors have moved onto food. States are targeting salt, sugar, trans-fats…essentially all the basic elements that make up food. They think we use too much of these ingredients and they are going to help.

I’m glad we have super-low unemployment, a booming economy, a Congress that pays its taxes, and a safe homeland. This way Government has time to fix the really important problems plaguing our great Nation, like salt.

The FDA is pushing the statist envelope even further by suggesting we should pack a nutrition label onto the front of all food packages. They don’t think you are capable of, or willing to, flip the box over and read. That’s complete non-sense. It’s more big brother trying to guilt trip us at the store.

Michelle Obama is doing her part by launching her anti-childhood obesity campaign. I’m sure happy we give the First Lady a budget to do important work like that. Maybe someone can inform Michelle that people in poverty eat more poorly and that we have 10% unemployment, so that means lots of people are eating lousy foods. I wonder if her efforts (and her husband’s) would be better spent getting folks a job.

“Fixing” people’s habits is antithetical to our heritage and culture. Rather than policing our grocery stores, why doesn’t Government get to work on that damn wall at the border, already.
